Eduardo Louback received his B.S. in mechanical engineering with honours from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC-MG), Brazil, in 2019. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC) in Canada. His expertise lies in vehicle performance and energy consumption. His research focuses on developing energy management strategies for battery electric vehicles and assessing drivability using driving simulators.

Eduardo’s interest in mathematics and physics in school led him to pursue engineering. Mechanical engineering became a natural choice, inspired by his father, who encouraged his passion for cars.
His first international academic experience came in 2016 as a research assistant at the University of Washington, USA. This followed an academic year at the University of California. His professional experience in the automotive industry began in 2018 as an intern with the Performance and Fuel Consumption Group at FCA Brazil.
Eduardo applied this experience to his undergraduate senior research project at PUC Minas. His project used the university’s vehicle dynamics simulator. The study received the Best-in-Class Award, and achieved two goals: implementing an advanced automatic transmission model and proving the simulator’s use for subjective drivability studies. The second goal was validated through amateur and professional driver feedback on different gear-shifting maps. After graduating in 2019, Eduardo continued working with the same group at FCA.
Shortly after, he was invited to apply to McMaster’s hybrid powertrain program as a M.Sc. student. The McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC) had recently installed a similar driving simulator, and they were seeking students with experience in this technology. Eduardo joined Dr. Ali Emadi’s team in September 2020 and became a Ph.D. student a year later.
His research focuses on energy management control for battery electric vehicles and drivability evaluation, using driving simulation tests. In addition to his thesis work, he has contributed to industry projects with Stellantis and CUBIC Transportation Systems.
