November 13, 2023: In the Media: Opportunities for Canada as the EV market grows to meet rising demand

Canada is doing well in terms of finding, mining, and processing materials critical to EV battery cells, but the real make-or-break will be in capitalizing on these opportunities by developing better technologies for the entire energy storage system and preparing skilled graduates, writes Prof. Ali Emadi of McMaster University. As we move away from fossil fuels, demand for electricity is rising quickly, especially since EVs need so much energy to charge their batteries.

Electric vehicles (EVs) trickled slowly into the market at first, but with proven technology, better performance, and lower operating costs—coupled with rising concerns about emissions from gasoline-powered cars—the rush is on not only to buy them, but to build them.

A handful of critical bottlenecks stand between matching supply to demand. Canada, having lost some auto manufacturing opportunities over the last 25 years, is in an especially good position to catch up and to grow significantly by helping to solve those remaining problems.
