Alex Tsao received his Bachelor of Engineering and Management at McMaster University, Canada, in 2022. He is currently completing his Master of Applied Science from the electrical & computer engineering department, at the same university, under the supervision of Dr. Berker Bilgin. His research interests include power electronics and the design & control of electric machines, specifically switched reluctance motors (SRM).
Full Profile
Alex has always had an interest in creating and designing solutions to real-world problems. This led him to study engineering after high school and select McMaster University as his place of study. After completing his first year of undergraduate engineering, Alex discovered a fascination with electrical circuits and electromagnetic physics. He decided to further develop his knowledge with these topics, in the electrical engineering and management program. This program advanced not only his engineering skills and expertise, but also gave him experience with core commerce courses in the fields of finance, accounting, marketing, and human resource management.
During his undergraduate degree, Alex also completed a co-op internship at McMaster University as an Instructional Assistant Intern (IAI) for the first-year ENGINEER 1P13 course, where he contributed to course organization, delivering labs/tutorials, and managing groups of teaching assistants. Through this experience, he developed strong communication skills, delivering information for a variety of technical backgrounds.
After completing his undergraduate degree and studying a variety of different fields and topics, Alex found an interest in power electronics and electric motor drives. With the exciting shift of the automotive industry to electrification, he wanted to contribute to the advancement of these future technologies. As a result, he decided to continue his studies further.
Presently, Alex is completing his Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) in the electrical & computer engineering department, under the supervision of Dr. Berker Bilgin, at the McMaster Automotive Resource Center (MARC). He also collaborates on an industry project with Stellantis N.V., in the field of power electronics.
