Dr. Carlos Vidal serves as Senior Principal Research Engineer and the leader of the Mobility Cube, a Centre of Excellence in artificial intelligence and smart mobility, at McMaster University, Canada. The Mobility Cube was established through a multi-million-dollar collaboration between McMaster University and Cubic Transportation Systems. Carlos has extensive experience in the automotive, batteries, renewables, and smart mobility industries. His research interests include digital twinning, Li-ion batteries, artificial intelligence (AI), and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for electric vehicles and renewables applications.
Carlos earned his B.S. in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), an MBA with a concentration in project management from Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), his M.A.Sc. in civil and environmental engineering from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in Brazil, and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from McMaster University, Canada. After completing his Ph.D., Carlos joined the McMaster Automotive Research Centre (MARC) as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, until October 2021. He then transitioned to leading the Mobility Cube, where he has been applying his leadership and expertise in artificial intelligence, modelling, battery management systems, and intelligent mobility. His hope is to drive innovation, while developing sustainable solutions for the future of transportation and the adoption of cleaner technologies.

Dr. Carlos Vidal began his academic journey in Brazil, earning a B.Sc. in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG). He then completed an MBA in project management at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), followed by an M.A.Sc. in civil and environmental engineering from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). Motivated to deepen his expertise in sustainable technologies, he pursued a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at McMaster University, Canada.
Throughout his academic training and early career, Carlos developed expertise in lithium-ion batteries, energy storage systems (ESS), artificial intelligence (AI), and digital twinning for electric and renewable energy applications. He went on to build a diverse career in the automotive, battery, renewable energy, and smart mobility industries—working with leading companies such as Samsung, BIC, and Moura.
Following his Ph.D., Carlos joined the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC) as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. In 2021, he transitioned to lead the Mobility Cube—a Centre of Excellence in AI and smart mobility at McMaster University, created through a multi-million-dollar partnership with Cubic Transportation Systems.
In his current role as Senior Principal Research Engineer and leader of the Mobility Cube, Carlos applies his academic and industry experience to advance intelligent mobility, battery management systems, and sustainable transportation technologies. His work focuses on bridging research and real-world applications to drive innovation and accelerate the adoption of cleaner, smarter mobility systems.
