Filipe Pinarello Scalcon received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with the highest distinction, from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Brazil, in 2017. He also received his M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the same university in 2019 and 2021, respectively. During that period, he conducted research as a member of the Power Electronics and Control Research Group (GEPOC), UFSM. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC), at McMaster University, Canada. His research interests include electrical machine drives, renewable energy conversion, reluctance machines, and digital control.
Full Profile
Born in Santa Maria, Brazil, Filipe’s curiosity about electricity began at an early age. Years later, while attending high school and taking physics classes, he realized that he had a passion for the subject and decided to pursue electrical engineering as a career.
During his time as an undergraduate student, Filipe joined the Power Electronics and Control Research Group (GEPOC) of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). This allowed him to gain a deeper understanding of power electronics, motor drives and control, as well as obtaining hands-on experience. In 2016, Filipe worked as an engineering intern at John Deere. During this period, he was a part of the Product Verification and Validation (PV&V) team. He worked with the instrumentation and field data acquisition of combines and planters. He also worked on improving the laboratory, by automating a hydraulic cylinder test bench.
In 2017, Filipe received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with the highest distinction, from the Federal University of Santa Maria. He then embarked on his graduate studies at the same university. During his time as a master’s student, Filipe carried out research on both switched and synchronous reluctance motors, mainly focusing on the control of these machines. After earning his master’s degree in 2019, he continued his research as a doctorate student at UFSM. For his thesis research, Filipe made contributions to the advanced control and performance improvement of switched reluctance motors. He also began publishing papers in cooperation with graduate students at McMaster University. In 2021, Filipe received his doctorate degree.
Finally, in 2022, Filipe moved to Canada and joined the McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC) as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. His current research interests include electrical machine drives, renewable energy conversion, reluctance machines, and digital control. At MARC, Filipe also works in industry-sponsored research projects.
