Srikanth Pillai

Ph.D Student
Research Focus: Machine Learning for Electric Motor Design.
Industry Focus: Aerospace Electrification; Electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) Aircraft; Automotive Electrification; Electric Mobility.

Srikanth Pillai earned a master of technology in electrical and electronics engineering from Mahatma Gandhi University, India (2012), and a bachelor of technology in the same field from Cochin University of Science and Technology, India (2009). Driven by a passion for teaching, he spent eight years as an assistant professor in the department of electrical and electronics engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a leading university in India.

Since joining Dr. Emadi’s research group at McMaster University’s McMaster Automotive Resource Centre (MARC) in 2020, Srikanth’s research has focused on high-performance electrical machine design, with a particular emphasis on high specific power motors. His work involves the electromagnetic design of axial and radial flux machines, recognized for their high-power density and suitability for aerospace applications. He is especially interested in the integration of artificial intelligence into electric motor design.

Srikanth has also contributed to projects involving the design of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) for washing machine applications, completed as part of his coursework. His experience at MARC includes hands-on involvement in motor design, prototyping, and dyno testing.
