Ziyu Zhao graduated from the University of Windsor, Canada, in 2019, with his B.A.Sc in mechanical engineering automotive option co-op. He received his B.A.Sc in vehicle engineering, from the Wuhan University of Technology, China, in 2020. He is currently pursuing a Master of Applied Science in mechanical engineering at McMaster University, under the supervision of Dr. Ali Emadi. His research interests include automotive engineering, battery energy management systems, battery thermal management systems, and battery testing.
Full Profile
From a young age, Ziyu greatly enjoyed mathematics and physics, due to the influence of his father, who was a math teacher. With an outstanding academic performance and interest in automotive engineering, Ziyu enrolled at the Wuhan University of Technology, in 2012, and majored in Vehicle Engineering. Through enrolling in a dual-degree program, Ziyu was able to transfer to the University of Windsor, Canada, in 2014, where he continued his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering Automotive Option.
During his studies at the University of Windsor, Ziyu was awarded some scholarships and was even enrolled in the dean’s list due to his superior grades. Ziyu was also a research assistant under several professors, for a variety of engineering and graduate projects. In addition, he joined a Co-op program and gained internship experience in several industrial and manufacturing companies while in Windsor. In 2017, he had the opportunity to participate in a one-year Co-op internship in the R&D department of the Schaeffler Group, in Germany. During this year, he showed great interest and analytical skills in mechanical research, and he acquired good multi-cultural communication skills. In 2019, Ziyu got his B.A.Sc. degree and graduated from the University of Windsor. He then decided to further pursue his studies in the area of electric vehicles.
Ziyu is currently conducting research at the McMaster Automotive Research Centre and completing his Master of Applied Science degree, under the supervision of Dr. Ali Emadi. Since joining this research group in September of 2019, Ziyu has been studying electrified powertrains and the battery energy management system. His research interests include battery thermal management system design and battery characterization experimentation and testing.
